Dr. Laura leave program behind

The blunt, conservative psychologist Dr. Laura Schlessinger has announced on Larry King Live that she is ending her time on her radio show The Dr. Laura Program .The entertainer has been under fire from angry listeners and anti-racism groups for using a racial slur while addressing an African-American caller who was asking for advice regarding racist situations. Dr. Schlessinger’s August 10 rant consisted of her philosophy on the usage of the n-word, that it was not inherently offensive, as comedians on HBO used it and rappers did also.

On Tuesday, Dr. Schlessinger told Larry King, “I decided it was time to move on to other venues where I could say my peace and not have to live in fear anymore. I’m not retiring. I’m not quitting. I feel energized actually, stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for people in this country.  I want to regain my First Amendment rights.  I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry or some special-interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent.”

The 63-year-ol Columbia grad has been in radio for more than 30 years, and is known for her frank manner and extremely conservative views. She has written books with titles such as Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives, The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, and Stop Whining, Start Living.
